Rules of the draw
The names of the 70 men’s teams and 4 women’s teams will be placed in dedicated containers for the draw as per the following:
The 4 teams in the Women's Tournament will be placed in a pool of 4. Each team will play 2 matches and at the end the 3rd and 4th will play for 3rd place and the 1st and 2nd will play for the Championship title.
The 70 teams in the Men's Tournament have been divided in 3 Tiers. Tier 1 will consist of 20 teams divided in 5 pools of 4, each team will play 3 pool matches. Teams in Ter 1 will be placed in pools A to E. Tier 2 will also consist of 20 teams divided in5 pools of 4 and each team will play 3 matches. Teams in Tier 2 will be placed in pools F to J. Tier 3 will have the remaining 30 Teams which will be divided in 6 pools of 4 and 1 pool of 6. Each team in Tier 3 will play 3 pool matches. Teams in Tier 3 will be placed in pools K to Q.
We will start by drawing the 4 Women's teams that will be placed in a pool of 4 and listed 1 to 4 based on the draw.
We will then draw the pools for Tier 3 Competition and we will fill up each pool alphabetically from pool K to pool P and filling up the spots from 1 to 4 based on the draw. The last 6 teams will make up pool Q and will still be drawn to fill up the spots from 1 to 6. Manual intervention will be exercised to avoid tams from the same Club to be included in the same pool and a special provision has been approved by the TLC that French Clubs should not be included in the same pool.
We will then continue by drawing the pools for Tier 2 Competition. Each pool will be filled up alphabetically from pool F to pool J and filling up the spots from 1 to 4 based on the draw. Like Tier 3, manual intervention will be exercised to avoid teams from the same Club to be included in the same pool.
The draw will conclude with Tier 1. The top 10 teams from Nashville 2016 have been seeded and divided in two groups of five based on the seeding (1 to 5 and 6 to 10). The other 10 teams are not seeded. The 10 unseeded teams will be drawn first and we will fill up the pools alphabetically from A to E and filling up spots 3 and 4 of each pool. We will then proceed to draw the teams seeded 6 to 10 and again starting from A to E those will be placed in the number 2 spot in each pool. The final draw will be for teams seeded 1 to 5 that will be again placed in pools A to E and will be placed on the number 1 spot of each poll. Manual intervention to avoid teams from the same Club playing in the same pool will be applied for Tier 1 as well.
